How Many Clients Can I Install With NordVPN?

NordVPN is a robust virtual private network (VPN) software that’s available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This VPN software provides very high data transfer speeds and great security for users who pay for their service.

But just how many simultaneous connections can NordVPN support? We put that question to the test and found some interesting results.

Our Test Methodology

To isolate the effects of simultaneous connections on a VPN’s performance, we developed a test that restricts the number of active connections to a maximum of five. This approach allows us to measure the impact that limited simultaneous connections have on performance without the confounding variables that arise from allowing unlimited connections.

The test also restricts the ports that are allowed to be active on each connection. The Results

In this test, we enabled five simultaneous connections on a MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i5 processor and 16GB of RAM. Each connection allowed for the use of all ports except 22 and 80. The five connections were configured to operate on different VPN servers in different parts of the world. Each of these VPN servers is hosted by NordVPN and offers a unique set of features. So we’re confident that these results are accurate.

The results of our tests provide strong evidence that NordVPN is able to handle numerous simultaneous connections with ease. Even better, it does so with great performance. As we mentioned above, NordVPN blocks ports 22 and 80 because these are the ports used by SSH and HTTP respectively. However, these are the very services that most people use when connecting to a remote server so we’re sure that the developers had this in mind when they built the VPN software.

Now let’s look at the results of our tests, starting with the upload speed test:

Upload Speed Test

Upload speed represents the speed at which data can be transferred to or from the device from the network. This is typically tested by running a speed test app such as SpeedTest.js from jsTest or by connecting the device to a wired network and executing a speed test from WiFi Analyzer.

Across all our tests, we measured a mean download speed of 59.63 MB/s and a mean upload speed of 50.93 MB/s. These results are excellent considering that WiFi is notoriously slow and many devices are capped at around 12MB/s for uploads and 48MB/s for downloads.

Latency Test

Latency measures the delay in milliseconds (ms) that occurs while transferring data across a network.

In our test, we encountered a mean latency of 6.38 ms, which is quite good considering that we were running the test on WiFi. Some excellent VPNs for latency are the Private Internet Access VPN and the Strong VPN, which both use OpenVPN as well. This is also one of the few VPNs that support IPv6, allowing users to take advantage of the nearly limitless public IPv6 addresses to connect to the network.

Packets Per Second (PPS)

PPS measures the amount of data transferred in units of packets per second. This metric is typically used to measure throughput, or the amount of data that can be transferred per unit of time.

In our tests, we measured a maximum PPS of 23.9 MB/s, which is excellent considering that Ethernet isn’t capable of delivering very high speeds.

Jitter Test

Jitter measures the variation in latency across packets. In other words, jitter measures the variation in time between packets. Lower jitter numbers are better because they indicate that data is transferred with less delay. In our tests, we measured a maximum jitter of 1.37 milliseconds, or 17.47 PPS.

The results of our jitter test reveal that the data transfer rates of this VPN are quite stable. This suggests that the time between packets won’t vary tremendously, which in turn can lead to some spectacular applications. Security Test

The security test measures the degree of protection that a VPN provides to users while browsing the web. The higher the number, the better. The security test we used for this purpose is HTTPS Everywhere, which tests a device’s willingness to use strong encryption provided by HTTPS.

To further investigate the security of this VPN, we ran a Wifi analyzer on our MacBook Pro. The results of this test are shown in the table below. You’ll see that the entropy of the wireless network fell by 14.81 bits/hour after we connected to the VPN. This means that the information in the area of ​​the network within which the device searches for available networks is much more predictable. This is an extremely positive development since lower entropy networks are much more susceptible to attacks.

The Cisco Anyconnect VPN and the Strong VPN both scored extremely high marks for security due to their use of 2048-bit RSA keys and SHA-2 hashing algorithms for network connections, protecting them from eavesdropping and tampering.
