How to Change IP Address on a VPN
Find your VPN provider’s IP
If you decide to change your IP address on a VPN, you will first need to find out what IP address your VPN provider assigns to you. To do this, you will need to log into your account on the VPN provider’s website and look at the ‘country information’ page (often found under ‘my account’ or ‘account information’ in the menu at the top of the website). This will give you the IP address of the VPN server in that country. You can also contact the VPN provider directly via email if you cannot find the country information on their website.
Create a Google account and login
Just like many other websites, The VPN Company’s website also has accounts that you can login with to save your settings or make other functionalities more convenient to use. When you create a new Google account, you will need to add a password. You should use a password that is at least eight characters and contains numbers, capital letters, and special characters.
After you created your Google account, you will land on the ‘My settings’ page of the VPN Company website. On this page, you can change your username, email address, and other account information. You can also make changes to your VPN configuration by clicking the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the page.
Change your IP address
On the VPN Company website, click the gear icon at the bottom right of the My Settings page to bring you to the VPN configuration page. Here you can change your VPN server’s IP address, port number, and other basic settings (unless you are using the basic plan, which has these settings pre-defined).
Activate Google DNS resolver
If you are not using your VPN’s own DNS resolver to automatically resolve DNS queries, then you will need to do this manually. To set up your own DNS resolver, navigate to your VPN Company’s website again and click the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the page. On this page, you can enter your own DNS resolver’s IP address and alternative DNS servers (the DNS servers of your choice).
Make sure to update your VPN client software
After you changed your VPN server’s IP address, you will need to disconnect from the VPN server and then reconnect to make the change effective. This is to ensure that your computer or device connects to the correct VPN server and that all your IP traffic is routed through this particular VPN server. In most cases, this is not something you need to do more than once or twice when switching between multiple VPN servers (though it is always a good idea to disconnect and reconnect when changing VPN servers).
Use a VPN that is registered with the Better Business Bureau (BBB)
The VPN Company is a well-regarded U.S.-based VPN provider that was founded in 2005 and is owned and operated by Private Internet Access. One of the things that make The VPN Company stand out from other VPN providers is that they provide a Free version of their product that does not require you to register a credit card to use. This is one feature that gives you the option of trying out the service without any risk.
The other feature that puts The VPN Company in a class of its own is that they periodically send out special offers to their customers via email. Those customers who have an account with The VPN Company and who receive these special offers are more likely to receive a good deal if they choose to make a purchase because they will be using a discount code provided by the company. This feature makes it easy for VPN companies to build a database of customers who are more likely to spend money and increase their revenue.
Consider using VPNs with Kill Switch functions
We recommend that you consider looking into VPNs that have a built-in ‘kill switch’. A kill switch allows you to temporarily disable the VPN software on your device (usually a laptop or a tablet) if it gets disconnected from the Internet or the VPN server (for example, if the laptop or tablet is rebooted or switched off).
When you use a VPN with a Kill Switch, the connection will automatically break if the device is disconnected from either the Internet or the VPN server. In most cases, this will ensure that the user cannot continue to access content that is restricted to that network (unless they know the secret handshake or they are on the company’s website and logged into their account). However, sometimes it is possible to trick a kill switch by using a different device or connecting the laptop or tablet to a different Internet provider (usually via a VPN). Most VPNs with a kill switch will automatically detect and prevent this sort of behavior.
Use free VPNs for fun
If you are not concerned about security issues or you just want to try out a new VPN service, then you can use one of the many free VPNs available online. While it is not recommended that you use these free VPNs for important tasks as they can be unreliable (especially if you use them on a daily basis), they are certainly useful for testing out a new VPN service or connecting from a different location (for example, if you are traveling) without having to worry about security issues.
Use a VPN to access geo-blocked content
We all love free content, but sometimes we need to pay for it. Traveling to another country and accessing content from that country (either for free or at a discounted rate) is becoming easier thanks to geo-blocking. While it is possible to unblock these kinds of websites using tools designed for that purpose, it is sometimes easier to use a VPN to access content that is blocked in your current location. This option is not without its risks, as we have already talked about how VPNs work but it is still the most convenient solution when you have no other option.
Use a VPN to access blocked content
We already mentioned how convenient it is to use a VPN to access content that is blocked in your current location (especially if you are traveling), but there are situations in which this option is not convenient or safe. For example, if you are accessing a website or an app which requires you to log in to access certain content (or if you are connecting to a public Wi-Fi network and the login details for this network are not safe or secret), using a VPN is not necessarily a good idea. So instead, try other methods to get around network restrictions.
Dont use a VPN if
If none of the above convince you to change your IP address on a VPN, then maybe these points will.
Firstly, while it is convenient to use a VPN to access content that is blocked in your current location, it is still not necessarily a good idea to do this all the time. Just because you can access a website or an app which requires you to be logged in to view some content, this does not mean that all of this content is available to the general public (if it is, then this is usually indicated by a copyright notice displayed at the top of the page or an ‘error’ message appearing when you try to access the site or the app).
Another thing to keep in mind is that you should use a VPN that is appropriately configured to suit your needs. It is often the case that VPNs are used by everyone (including the owners) for convenience purposes but if you want to use a VPN to secure your personal data and you cannot find a suitable one, then you should look elsewhere.
