How to Change Your VPN Connection on Xbox

If you have an Xbox 360 or Xbox One, you may have noticed that your console can sometimes have trouble connecting to the internet when playing certain games, or doing certain things online. Sometimes it will work just fine and other times it will be pretty frustrating. There is a way to change your VPN settings on your Xbox, so you can get rid of these occasional frustrating problems and enjoy smooth gameplay all of the time.

Here is how you can change your VPN connection on your Xbox.

Go To Settings

You will need to head to the Settings of your Xbox. This can be found by going to the gear icon in the lower right corner of the screen, and then selecting Settings.

Once there, you will see a screen that looks similar to this:

As you can see, there are a variety of VPN options here. Select the one you are most comfortable with, and then click on the box next to it to toggle it on or off.

Use A VPN When Playing Certain Games

Certain games on the Xbox, specifically those made by Blizzard, may require you to use a VPN when playing them. This is because some regions of the world where these games are sold actually have restrictions on which services gamers can use. If you play games that require use of a VPN regularly, it is highly likely that you will have problems with connecting to the internet when playing certain games, such as Overwatch, or World of Warcraft. To solve this issue, you can follow these steps:

  • Turn on your VPN.
  • Play the game. If your network connection drops out during gameplay, you will get a pop-up with the error message “This game requires us to be online to play. Would you like to connect to the internet now?”
  • Click on “No” to cancel the connection, or “Yes” to confirm it. If you accidentally answer “Yes”, your Xbox console will automatically reconnect to the internet when you start up the game again.

Change Your VPN When You Navigate To Certain Websites

Certain websites, like Twitter, are actually sensitive to the type of VPN you use, and how you use it. If you use a cheap, free VPN and then try to access those sensitive websites, you may find that you cannot log in and may even get kicked off of the service. To avoid this, you will need to update your VPN settings to be specific to those sites, or create a new VPN for those sites only. This way, you can ensure that you do not have any problems accessing sites like Twitter when using this VPN.

Use Different VPNs For Different Games

Not all games are created equal, and some actually require a specific VPN to work properly. For example, if you have an Xbox One S and play a lot of 4K content, you will need to use a VPN that can handle these types of connections. If you are playing games on Xbox One X, you will need to use a VPN that can handle its high-performance state.

Other than that, all Xbox games should work with any VPN you use. Just keep in mind that some games may require certain settings, and it is always a good idea to consult the manual or online resources for help. Once you figure out the right VPN for your needs, you will not have any problems connecting to the internet when playing your Xbox.
