How to Configure a VPN for RV042
AT&T has recently updated their router specifications to support the RV042 and now it is possible to configure a VPN for this device. In this article, we will discuss how to configure a VPN for the RV042 so you can have a safer and more secure internet experience while traveling.
The Basics Of Setting Up A VPN For RV042
Before you begin setup, it is important to understand the basics. The RV042 is a relatively new device from AT&T and it’s one of the first routers to support Voice over LTE (VoLTE). You can read our review of the device here if you’re curious as to why it is important to understand the basics of VPN configuration for this device.
While the RV042 is more than capable of handling most home network tasks, it is a little different than most consumer routers. That’s because it also supports some of the more advanced features of a mobile phone – calling over Wi-Fi, making and receiving calls over VoLTE, etc.
Also, unlike most consumer routers, the RV042 supports the IPVanish VPN protocol. This protocol is more secure and offers better performance than PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) or L2TP (Layer Two Tunneling Protocol) which is usually used for home networking. This protocol also provides better performance than L2TPv2. So, if you’re looking for a secure and faster solution, you could try IPVanish for your VPN needs.
Step 1: Set Up Your Router To Accept VPN Connections
To set up your VPN connection, you will need to log into your router’s web interface. Most routers have a login page that looks something like this:
On this login page, you will need to enter your email address and a password. This password will be used to login to your router in the future so be sure to pick a strong password.
Once you’re logged in, you will see a list of available connections. To create a VPN connection, you will need to click the Create New Connection button near the top of the page. This will bring up a form that will need some basic information including the type of VPN connection you want to create.
You can choose from four different types of VPN connections that are supported by the RV042 – PPTP, L2TP, L2TPv2, and IPVanish.
Unfortunately, not all VPNs are created equal. Some are much more secure than others and it is important to choose a reputable provider that has a good standing with the Better Business Bureau. You can look for signs of a good VPN provider including the presence of a valid certificate from a reputable Certificate Authority (such as Thawte, GeoTrust, or GoDaddy), a privacy policy that you feel comfortable with, etc.
Step 2: Login To Your VPN Provider
Now that you have a VPN connection available, you will need to login to your VPN provider. You can do this by entering your email address and password on the provider’s website.
After you’ve logged in, you will see a list of all the compatible devices with the service. Make sure you select the RV042 as the product and check the box next to the Enable service option. Then, click the Save button at the top of the page.
You will now be connected to your VPN and can begin configuring services on your router. Be sure to click the connection’s profile to bring up the VPN’s configuration page.
On this configuration page, you can access various settings related to the VPN connection. These include the ability to log in and out of the VPN connection, change the VPN connection’s name, and reassociate previously authorized devices. Make sure you click the gear icon on the right side of the page to bring up the VPN connection settings page. You can then change the VPN connection’s settings to meet your needs.
Step 3: Associate The RV042 With Your VPN Connection
The next step is to associate the RV042 with your VPN connection. You do this by entering the email address and passphrase of your VPN connection on the device’s Settings page. Make sure you keep these credential safe as you will need them in the future to log in to your VPN.
After you’ve entered the email address and passphrase on the RV042, you can click the green button to save these credentials. Then, you can move to the next step.
You can repeat this process for other compatible devices you have connected to your VPN. Be sure to click the connection’s profile to bring up the device’s settings page. Then, you can click the gear icon at the top of the page to access the connection’s configuration page.
Here, you can change the connection’s settings to meet your needs. You can also click the gear icon again to bring up a list of all the available devices associated with this connection. You can then remove devices you don’t need from the list or add new ones by clicking the Add (+) symbol next to the input box at the top of the page.
To add a new device, you will need to provide the device’s email address and the profile of the connection it will be associated with. Then, you can confirm by clicking the Add button at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Test Your Setup
Once your device is associated with your VPN connection, you can test that everything is working correctly by browsing the internet. When you browse to a website, it will ask you to confirm that you want to connect to this website using your private network. Click the Option button to choose the VPN connection you just setup and all your previously authorized devices will be available.
If all goes well, you should be able to browse the internet securely with no issues.
