I’ve been using NordVPN for a little while now and I love it. My favorite feature is their KillSwitch which allows me to remotely clear my VPN traffic from servers I’ve connected to when I travel. It’s the ultimate privacy and security boost if you’re using public Wi-Fi while traveling. You can read my full review here, but I’ll republish the short version for those who wish to recreate the same setup on their own Mac.
To set up a NordVPN kill switch on your Mac, you’ll need to have a working knowledge of the CLI (command line interface) as well as a basic understanding of networking. It also helps to have a working knowledge of macOS (or macOS X as it is commonly known).
NordVPN’s website has a step-by-step guide that will get you up and running in no time. Be sure to check it out if you’re looking to get started.
Set Up Your VPN Connection And Network To Create A NordVPN KillSwitch
NordVPN’s customer support is great. They’re always available to help and offer some of the best tutorials online. You can sign up for their newsletter to receive useful tips and tricks on using their service or download their desktop app and let it walk you through the setup process.
Go to their website and click the Connect button to set up your VPN connection. From here, you can see your current VPN connection status and choose to create a new connection or connect to an existing one.
If you have an iPhone, you can download the NordVPN app from the App Store and connect simply by scanning a QR code. Once connected, you can follow the steps in the desktop app to create a NordVPN kill switch. For other devices, you’ll need to set up a manual VPN connection which is a bit more complicated. But it’s doable. Once connected, choose Menu > VPN > KillSwitch to access the feature.
Configure The NordVPN KillSwitch
You’ll first need to decide which servers you want to route your VPN traffic through when using the kill switch. You can do this by following these steps:
Go to the Settings app on your Mac and click on Network. You’ll see a list of your connected networks along with their names. Choose the one you’re currently using to connect to the internet (it should be the first one listed).
If you’re not sure which one is the default, click on the Apple icon (next to the word Wi-Fi) and a menu shows you your current network settings. Choose the one you use most often.
Now that you have your default network selected, click on the drop down arrow next to VPN Connections and choose Create VPN Connection from the menu.
A new window will open and you’ll be prompted to input a name for your connection. Type in a name that will help you distinguish between multiple VPN connections (such as ‘work VPN’ and ‘personal VPN’).
Next, you’ll be taken to the VPN Connection Settings page where you can choose a location for the connection. You can choose a server closest to you (to speed up your connection) or select one that is near your workplace or studies (if you’re connected to a corporate network at your school).
Choose a strong password (at least 8 characters) and save the connection. You’ll now be returned to the main Network Settings screen where you can see the list of your VPN connections. Choose the one you created just a moment ago and click on the gear icon next to it to view the connection’s details.
The next step is to configure the VPN connection to use the kill switch. Open the connection’s settings and scroll down to the Kill switch section. Choose On From the drop-down menu and then choose a button next to On to enable the feature (even when the VPN connection is active).
Finally, click on the gear icon to save these changes. You’re now ready to use your NordVPN kill switch. If you’ve followed all of these steps correctly, you’ll see a green checkmark next to the VPN connection.
Enjoy Your New, Private Connection
Once your VPN traffic is hidden from view, it’s essentially untraceable. This makes it much harder for anyone (including law enforcement) to monitor your internet activity. As long as you have a strong password and follow these steps, no one will be able to interfere with your private communications.
Encrypted connections are also great for keeping your personal or company data secure when using public Wi-Fi. You can use the internet safely and confidently without worrying about your personal information being intercepted by someone in the nearby vicinity.
The Bright Side
NordVPN is an excellent choice for anyone who wants privacy and security on their Mac. You can create a strong, private connection in just a few minutes. Plus, their customer support is fantastic. If you ever have questions or need assistance, their forums are always open to help. So, overall, it’s a great choice for anyone who wants a simple yet effective solution to their internet privacy problems.
