How to Create a Free VPN Account
Did you know that you can create a Free VPN Account with nearly all major VPN providers, including NordVPN, IP Vanish, Private Internet Access, and PureVPN? All you need is a reliable WiFi connection and a few minutes of your time. So let’s get started.
Choose A Strong Password
We all know that typical passwords such as ‘password’ and ‘123456′ are easily compromised. To keep your personal information secure, you should use a strong password that is unique to you.
Thankfully, you can generate an unlimited number of strong passwords using password managers like 1Password, Dashlane, or LastPass. Simply enter the password you want to use for your account into the password manager, and the app will generate a random strong password for you.
The best part? Each of these apps will also generate a bitwarden.conf file for you to back up your generated passwords. So if you lose your phone or it accidentally gets broken, you can still access all of your accounts thanks to the automatic backup.
Sign Up For The Free Version
Now that you have a strong password, it’s time to secure your Free VPN Account. To do this, you need to visit the website of the VPN provider you selected and click the ‘Sign Up’ button.
From there, you will be asked to enter your email address and a password. The password must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least 2 of the following 4 numerals, lowercase letters, and uppercase letters:
- Numbers
- Lowercase Letters
- Uppercase Letters
- A-Z
- A-Z
Once you’ve entered this, click the ‘Sign Up’ button. Now, you’ll be presented with a ‘Login’ page.
Simply enter your email address and password, and click the ‘Login’ button to gain access to the VPN. You can now close the browser and continue with the next step.
Activate Your Free VPN Account
Once you’ve logged in to your Free VPN Account, you will be presented with a list of VPN servers located around the world.
It is strongly suggested that you change the server location to your country. Doing this ensures that your personal information will remain private while you are using the service.
To change the server location, click the ‘Change’ button next to the server location. This will open a new browser tab with the site’s VPN configuration page. You can now close the original browser tab. On the VPN configuration page, you can select a security layer and login method.
Here you can choose the level of encryption. The two options are ‘None’ (unsecured) and ‘Tier 1′ (secured). Tier 1 is the strongest security layer and is the default setting if you don’t select anything else.
If you select ‘None’, all of the data you enter while connected to any of the servers will be visible and accessible to anyone who has access to your PC or phone. This is the least secure setting and is only suitable for Wi-Fi connections that are not protected by a password.
If you select ‘Tier 1′, you will be asked to enter your phone number and email address. You will then be required to give the app permission to share your information with the VPN provider so it can automatically sign you back in when you reconnect to a server.
If you forget your phone or it breaks, you will lose access to all of your accounts. To prevent this from happening, you can enable ‘Two Factor Authentication’ which will force you to enter a code whenever you sign in. This is usually a one-time-use code that you can set up with the app’s security team directly from your phone. This is an extra layer of security and is recommended for users who use sensitive information online.
Set Up For Automatic Backups
One of the nice things about having a VPN account is the fact that you can automatically back up all of your important data in the event of a hard drive failure or catastrophic system crash.
To initiate a backup, you need to open the app’s settings and click the ‘Backup’ button. Next, you will be asked to select which folders you want to back up. Normally, it is a good idea to back up your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders.
To back up other folders, you can enter the folder path in the ‘Folder’ field, and the app will walk you through the backup process. When it is finished, click the ‘Restore’ button to complete the process.
Access The Apps You Need
Once you have a VPN account set up, it’s time to download the apps you need to access the websites you want to protect.
To do this, you need to go back to the VPN provider’s website and click the ‘Download’ button for the app you need. When the download finishes, you will be presented with a list of available apps.
With all of the VPN apps you can download, you’re bound to run into a few duplicates. To prevent this, go into the app’s settings and select ‘Delete Duplicates’. This will remove all apps that are the same as or similar to the apps you already have installed on your phone.
Secure All Important Data
You should take the time to secure all of the data on your phone, including the data stored on the hard drive of your PC.
If you have a Dropbox account, you can create a new folder named ‘Privacy’ and keep all of your private documents there. Then, whenever you download a file from a private link or email, you can move it to your ‘Privacy’ folder to keep it secure.
Did you know that all of the major VPN providers offer a free tier that allows you to connect to servers in dozens of countries? This means that you do not have to limit yourself to accessing servers within your own country. All of your data, regardless of location, is still fully protected and secure.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Did you know that many vulnerable websites and services require you to log in with your username and password? Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a good way to protect yourself from unauthorized access to your personal information.
To implement this extra layer of security, you need to go back to the VPN’s settings page and click the ‘Two Factor Authentication’ button. Next, you will be prompted to enter a security code whenever you log in. Once you’ve done this, you will be automatically signed in. You can now close the original browser tab.
Doing all of these things will not only give you a better experience online, but it will keep your personal information secure as well. So if you’re looking for a way to improve your security online, consider getting a VPN account. With these tips, you can easily set one up.
