Even though Apple has made it possible for users to connect a massive number of smart devices, it has also created a massive security headache for anyone using network services from one of its platforms.
Thanks to a new open-source project called StrongLoop, it’s now possible to get a complete picture of what’s going on with your iOS devices – including Macs and iPads – even when it’s connected to a Wifi network. With this information at your fingertips, you can take a more proactive approach to securing your data and devices than ever before.
When you use a VPN to connect to the internet, it creates a secure connection that masks your identity and provides you with a different IP address. This makes it much harder for hackers or oppressive regimes to identify and track your devices when you’re using public wifi.
Apple has provided a special area of its website called “Privacy Considerations” to help users understand the implications of using a VPN on its platforms. This area covers everything from logging to third-party connections, explaining precisely how VPNs work and why you need to use them.
On one hand, this sounds great! But on the other, it’s overwhelming information that doesn’t necessarily translate to something a non-tech user can understand. Plus, there’s a wealth of information on the internet about how to remove a VPN simply by using a different device.
What Is StrongLoop?
StrongLoop is an open-source project that was started by IBM in 2016 with the goal of bringing visibility to the internet of things. As the name suggests, StrongLoop makes it easy to monitor and track the activity of all the devices (including Macs, iOS, and Android phones) connected to your WiFi network.
The software runs on open-source software like Linux and Docker, so anyone can download it and use it for free. It’s especially useful if you’re using WiFi networks at hotels or coffee shops, as it keeps track of all your activity and prevents you from spending extra on data just to keep your internet connection.
Why Should You Use StrongLoop?
Thanks to its comprehensive user interface, powerful search features, and detailed network activity graphs, it’s not hard to see why StrongLoop is quickly becoming one of the most popular VPN apps for iOS devices. Here are a few reasons why.
- It has a minimalistic and clean design that focuses on functionalities rather than flashy themes or animations.
- It offers robust encryption standards, including military-grade AES 256 bit encryption, along with protocols such as PFS and SRP.
- Its unique ‘app-less’ design requires no configuration and ensures that it always works when you use it.
- It offers a variety of useful features, including a kill switch to protect your personal data when connected to public WiFi, an individual VPN profile for each of your devices, a proxy server for when you’re abroad, etc.
How To Use StrongLoop
Once you’ve installed the app on one of your iOS devices, you can start using it immediately. On the device’s Home screen, tap the gear icon (three vertical dots) in the top right corner and select Settings.
From here, you can choose to configure the app to your liking or you can toggle the visibility of System Ads in order to remove the occasional pop-up when you use the internet via WiFi. Once you’ve done that, you can tap the ‘+’ symbol that appears in the middle of the bottom status bar and start scanning for available networks.
You don’t have to login or register with StrongLoop to use it. Simply select the network you want to use from the drop-down menu and tap the Connect button.
After your device connects to the network and you start seeing the “X” symbol in the left-hand corner of the status bar, you can begin using the app to browse the internet privately and securely. When you’re done, simply tap the menu icon (three horizontal dots) in the top right corner of the app screen and select Disconnect to log off from the network.
If you ever need to, you can stop using the app by navigating to Settings > Privacy and then selecting the Clear All Settings button.
As you can see, StrongLoop makes it easy to control what data you make public and how you access the internet privately. With this app, you can finally feel comfortable using public WiFi at hotels, restaurants, and other public places without worrying about any kind of monitoring or interception.
