How to Install a VPN on a Spectrum Router

Use a VPN to keep your personal data secure when online and to prevent others from identifying your location. This is especially beneficial if you’re traveling or living abroad as it prevents you from being tracked down by the government or other malicious parties. Installing a VPN app on your mobile device is probably the simplest and most convenient way to connect to a VPN. However, if you have a Spectrum router at home, you can also utilize its built-in VPN capabilities without having to run any extra software.

Find the Network Name (SSID)

The first step is to find the network name (SSID) of the Spectrum router that you have connected to at home. You can do this by scrolling down the Router tab on the Network panel and looking for the name (SSID) that is currently listed there. This is the unique and identifying part of the network name that you will use to connect to it via WiFi (wireless fidelity). You can connect to this network via WiFi by entering the network name into the WiFi settings of your mobile device. Make sure that the SSID is not listed in the Shared WiFi database of your local hotspot provider.

Create A VPN Connection

Once you have located the Spectrum router, you can connect to its VPN capabilities by creating a VPN connection. To do this, click VPN in the menu of the Network panel and then click Add VPN connection in the pop-up menu that appears. Give the VPN connection a friendly name (such as “My Spectrum VPN connection”) and select the secure encryption type (typically WPA2 or WPA3 Protected WiFi Security) from the drop-down menu. Finally, fill in the other fields of this form appropriately and click Next to proceed.

Activate VPN At Router Level

Once you have created the VPN connection at the Router level, you can activate it. To do this, click VPN in the Router menu and then click VPN settings in the pop-up menu that appears. Continue through the configuration screens until you reach the Settings screen. You will find the option to activate (or deactivate) the VPN protocol at the Router level underneath the General tab. To keep your personal data secure, ensure that this option is Activated (the default setting) and keep your settings as close to the default values as possible.

Connect To The Internet Through The VPN

To keep your personal data secure and to prevent others from tracking your activity online, you should always utilize a VPN when online. You can connect to the VPN when you start your mobile device or when you log into a wireless network at home (such as WPA or WPA2 encrypted WiFi). To connect to the VPN when you boot up your mobile device, you can either connect to a wireless network first or set the VPN app to start automatically when you connect to a WiFi hotspot. When you are connected to a WiFi hotspot, you should see a VPN icon in the status bar at the top of your mobile screen. Make sure that your mobile device is set to require a password to connect to a WiFi network, so that even if an otherwise unintended person gets access to your WiFi network (the password is easy to guess or read), they still cannot connect to your network via the VPN connection. If you are still using a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet via your Router, you can simply dial in the VPN connection (the dial-up number and password) before connecting to the Internet.

Use The VPN To Access Local Resources

If you are in the United States, for example, you can use your Virtual Private Network to access local resources, such as Netflix restriction free. In order to watch a Netflix show for example, all you have to do is open the Netflix app and connect to the VPN connection that you created at the Router level. The Netflix app will detect that you are connected to a VPN and will present you with a menu of VPN-locked movies and shows. Alternatively, you can use your VPN to access other restricted websites, such as YouTube, which will also present you with a menu of restricted videos.

Protect Your Online Activities

If you are a privacy conscious user, you should be wary of any company that does not protect your personal data. The companies that you should avoid are the ones that do not secure your personal data. A good vpn company will not only encrypt your data but will also keep it confidential. They will also not log your activity or share your data with any third parties. If you have any doubts about the security of a particular vpn company, it is best to avoid them. In order to keep your data secure when online, it is best to avoid all unprotected WiFi hotspots and to connect to a VPN when needed.

Secure File Sharing With Your VPN

One of the main drawbacks of WiFi is that it is very easy to share your WiFi network and all of its resources with others. In order to secure your personal data when sharing files with others via WiFi, you should always connect to a VPN when sharing files or using file sharing programs such as Dropbox or Google Drive. This will make sure that no one else can access your shared files or devices when they are not encouraged or prevented from accessing them by the setting of the VPN app (drop boxes and google drives for example are often set to allow all users to access the files and devices).
