How to Set Up a VPN Connection on a Router

In the past few years, VPNs have become very popular. A VPN is a type of security software that allows you to connect to another server (usually located in another country). Once you connect, your internet connection becomes secure.

Setting up a VPN on a router is not difficult, but it does require a few minutes of your time. This tutorial will walk you through the steps to set up a VPN connection on a router so that you can connect to the internet securely.

What Is A Router?

A router is a device that connects your computer or other devices to the internet. They are used to receive incoming internet connections and forward them to the correct destination (e.g. a computer, smartphone, or other devices).

Routers come in many different sizes and forms so that you can find one that suits your needs. Most routers are compact and don’t take up much space, so you can store them anywhere easily. Some larger models, such as the TP-Link model, Arlo Smart Security Camera, and NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo can fit multiple devices and have enough storage to handle heavy internet usage. Requirements For Setting Up A VPN On A Router

In order to set up a VPN on a router, you will need the following things:

  • A router
  • A computer or other device
  • Software (either free or paid)
  • A VPN account (also called an ‘SSID’ and ‘password’ pair)

Setting Up The Router

The first step is to install the router’s software. Most routers these days are already set up to be managed through a web browser online, so all you need to do is log in and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your VPN.

Make sure to select a strong ‘password’ as the default login, and don’t use the default username (i.e. ‘admin’) as your computer’s user name. Doing this will help protect your privacy when logging into the router via SSH (Secure Shell) or other types of remote access applications (e.g. TeamViewer, LogMeIn, etc.).

Configuring The Computer Or Other Device

After you have set up the router, you need to configure your computer or other device to connect to it. Follow the instructions in your router’s documentation to do this. In most cases, you will need to enter your VPN credentials (i.e. ‘password’ and ‘username’), but you may need to enter a ‘PIN’ or ‘Personal Identification Number’ as well.

If you are using a wired connection, make sure that your computer/device is configured to recognize the internet connection as being wired (e.g. through an RJ45 jack). If you are using a wireless connection, make sure that your device is registered with the company from which you obtained the internet access (e.g. your wireless carrier).

How To Connect To The Internet With A VPN

After you have configured your computer or other device, you can start using the internet through the VPN. To do this, open up a web browser and navigate to the VPN’s website. Once you are on the website, you will need to enter the username and password that you created during the setup process. If everything is configured correctly, you should be able to connect to the internet securely through the VPN.

Make sure to read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy thoroughly before using the service. These documents will tell you how your data is handled by the company that provides the service. In most cases, these companies do not sell your data to third parties, but they may use your data to improve their service or to send out important notifications.
