A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a type of network security software that secures and privatises your data while you’re using public networks like WiFI or 3G. You install the VPN software on your device, and it allows you to connect to servers that are geographically closer to you (to improve your speed and reduce latency).
These servers are then required to decrypt (or encrypt) all of your internet traffic before it reaches your device, so that nobody, including Google or anyone else, can read it. This is why it’s known as a VPN; because it provides a private network that’s just like a physical private network (albeit not as secure as a physical private network). VPNs are great for privacy and security because they:
- Allow you to access restricted content and services
- Encrypt your internet traffic
- Allow you to securely purchase goods online (from a known and trusted source)
- Reduce the risk of identity theft
- Offer a more private and confidential way to communicate online
There are a few different types of VPNs, but the two most popular types are pure PPVPNs (Layer 3) and IKEv2 VPNs (Layer 2). If you’re not familiar, a VPN client (such as the one above) connects to a VPN server (which in turn connects to a Content Delivery Network \/ CDN, or a back-end office network), and uses that network for all of its traffic. This is usually the case for users who download torrents or use file sharing networks like BitTorrent. In the screenshot above, you can see that Google is blocking access to The Pirate Bay because I use an openVPN connection to the TPB server. It’s worth noting that you don’t necessarily need a VPN to use the Pirate Bay, but it is the only one of its kind that I can think of that’s not safe to use with an open connection.
Why Setup A VPN in QBitTorrent?
QBitTorrent is one of the largest and most popular BitTorrent clients, with over 400 million downloads worldwide and over 25 million monthly active users.
Users rely on it for a variety of things, from being able to share large files with their friends and family to being able to stream movies and TV shows to their computers and mobile devices. One of the significant advantages of QBitTorrent is that it has an open source project that allows the developers to keep making improvements and adding new features. This way, the app keeps evolving and changing, while still being considered ‘viral’ and popular.
Because of this open source nature, it is very easy for the developers to become involved in the community and contribute to the success of the app. One such feature that was introduced as part of the 0.99 update and has since been adopted by the majority of users is VPN integration. The idea behind this feature is to provide users with a seamless experience when downloading content from or sharing content with other users who are on other networks (such as a corporate network or the WiFi at a coffee shop).
To implement this feature, the developers teamed up with various companies like NordVPN and IP Vanish, and worked with them to create a VPN solution that would be effective and efficient within the BitTorrent ecosystem. This solution, dubbed ‘QBitTorrent Premium’, is a combination of the above VPN services, designed to give users the best of both worlds: the speed and security of a VPN, combined with the easy-to-use interface and customisable settings of QBitTorrent.
How Does QBitTorrent VPN Work?
Let’s get into the nuts and bolts of how this VPN solution works. You’ll need:
- At least one Android or iOS device (preferably both)
- A Wi-Fi connection
- A network cable
- A VPN app
You download the QBitTorrent app to your device, and register with the service (you may need to verify your identity via email or phone call). After this is done, you’ll be presented with a login screen (above). You can then enter your chosen username and password, and click ‘Login’.
If you’re on a public network such as the one at a coffee shop or airport, you’ll notice that your traffic has a new look. Instead of going to the CDN (Content Delivery Network) directly, your requests will be routed via the VPN service. This improves your speeds and adds some security by keeping your connection private and confidential. You can also configure the VPN service to only allow specific IP addresses and/or ranges to connect (this can help prevent someone from trying to hijack your account by guessing your passwords).
After you’ve logged in for the first time, you’ll be presented with a new screen that allows you to select the region (and server) that you wish to connect to. Make sure that you select a server located in the country that you are in (if you’re not, you may end up at a different geographical location to where you’re trying to connect from).
If you’re connecting from an iOS device, you’ll need to make sure that your VPN app is turned on, and that your device is configured to use the VPN whenever it connects to WiFi. On the other hand, if you’re connecting from an Android device, you’ll need to make sure that your VPN app is turned on and configured to connect to WiFi (this will be done automatically for you by the app if you’re connected to a network with a password). If this is your first time connecting to the VPN or changing the settings, you may need to read the instructions that come with the app.
An Enthusiastic Developer Community
One of the significant advantages of using an open source project like QBitTorrent is that it has an incredibly active and friendly community of developers who are always willing to help and contribute. The open source nature of the project means that anyone can download the source code and see exactly how it works, which in turn makes it a greater chance of getting bugs fixed sooner than later.
This also means that new features can be added with less risk of them being broken by a third party. One of the most recent features that was added is the QR code scanner, which is powered by the QRCode scanner library. This feature was requested by users repeatedly, so it was added and is effectively being used already. It’s a great example of how the community comes together and helps one another when there’s a clear need.
How To Setup A VPN in QBitTorrent
In this section, we’ll give you step-by-step instructions on how to setup a VPN in QBitTorrent. First, you’ll need to download the app from the Google Play Store or the App Store.
Open the App Store on your iOS device, and search for the ‘QBitTorrent’ keyword. Press the ‘Get’ button below the first result, and install the app.
On the other hand, open the Google Play Store and search for the ‘QBitTorrent’ keyword. Press the ‘Get’ button below the first result, and install the app.
Once the app is installed, launch it and register with your email address and password. If you haven’t already, connect to a network (such as the one at a coffee shop or airport) so that you can begin using the app. Now that you have a VPN, enter your email address and password, then select the ‘Login’ button. After logging in, you’ll be presented with a ‘Select a server’ screen.
You can then select your VPN protocol (PPTP or L2TP) and enter the name of your chosen server (this is the location that your content will be routed to when you’re connected to a network).
Once you’ve chosen your server and VPN protocol, click the ‘Select’ button.
This will then direct you to the Settings screen (accessible from the navigation bar at the top). Here, you can change your username and password, as well as add or remove custom icons and banners to represent your account (these are the little images that appear at the top and bottom of each page in your account).
Finally, click the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the settings screen to save your changes.
Now that you have a VPN up and running, you can use it to download and stream content from external sources securely. Whether you’re using a private network at home or office, or are just using public networks like WiFi or mobile data, a VPN will make your experience much more convenient and private.
