How to Setup VPN on ASUS Router App

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows users to connect to a remote network through secure tunnels. The purpose of a VPN is to provide confidentiality, authentication, and privacy to users while they are online. With the increasing usage of public Wi-Fi, it is critical that we have a way to secure our online activity. There are various types of VPNs, but the two most common types are VPN Tunnel and OpenVPN. We will discuss how to setup and use both of these types of VPNs on the ASUS router app, which is currently one of the most popular apps for setting up VPNs.

Using A VPN Tunnel To Secure Your Connection

VPN Tunneling is the simplest way to secure your connection as it requires no configuration. Simply download and install the VPN app from the ASUS website, which will then ask you to create a login for the app. Once you have created an account, you will be able to connect to VPN servers around the world and enjoy a secure connection to public Wi-Fi networks. If you are new to VPNs, you can click here to read our in-depth article on how to secure your Wi-Fi connection with a VPN.

Although VPN Tunneling provides a simple solution, it has some major drawbacks. First, the service only works with a select group of VPN providers, namely, those who maintain an active license to offer VPNs to the public. In some situations, you may experience slower speeds since your internet connection is now passing through the VPN server. And finally, VPN Tunneling doesn’t offer complete encryption, which can be problematic if you are accessing private forums or sending sensitive information online.

Using An OpenVPN-enabled Router To Completely Protect Your Connection

The OpenVPN-enabled router is the ultimate way to secure your connection because it allows you to utilize a VPN server that is located near you, which means minimal data traveling and minimal speeds hit. To set up OpenVPN on a router, you will need to download the openvpn client software from the official website, create a username and password, and then configure your router to connect to the created server. Once you have done that, you will be able to use the app to connect to the VPN server and enjoy a secure connection to the internet.

One of the main benefits of using an OpenVPN-enabled router is that you can use a VPN service that is actually free. Most VPN services offer free trials, but once you subscribe to their premium plan, you will have to pay a one-time fee to connect. In most cases, this cost is negligible and it is certainly worth it to avoid paying exorbitant fees to access the internet.

However, there are some drawbacks to this method as well. First, since your internet connection passes through the VPN server, your data is visible to hackers if they were to physically intercept the traffic. Second, not all VPN services are created equal. Some are much more secure than others, so it is important that you understand the level of encryption the service provides before you start using it. In some situations, where you can’t easily upgrade your internet service due to geographical restrictions, an unencrypted connection is the only available option.

In our next section, we will discuss how to setup and use PPTP VPNs on the ASUS router app, which works similar to OpenVPN-enabled routers but uses a different method for connecting to the VPN server.

Setting Up A VPN Using PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)

PPTP is another common method of creating a VPN connection and it is more widely utilized than OpenVPN due to its ease of setup and use. To create an account with a VPN service that supports PPTP, you will simply have to input your email address and password and then click the ‘Create Account’ button. After creating your account and logging into it, you will see the list of available servers (if you are looking for a free VPN, you will find many limited-function servers that have been locked away for public use).

Simply choose a server that is located near you and then click the connect button. You will now be able to use the app to connect to the selected server and enjoy a secure internet connection. You can find instructions on how to use the app in our previous How to use a VPN article or you can watch a quick video tutorial below.

Although simpler than using an OpenVPN-enabled router to connect to a VPN, there are still some drawbacks to using PPTP. First, since this protocol does not require any configuration, it is a much simpler process for the average user but it lacks the security of a fully-configured VPN. Second, since your internet connection passes through the VPN server, your data is visible to hackers if they were to intercept the traffic. Finally, not all VPN services support PPTP, so you are out of luck if the service you are using does not offer this option.

Using A VPN To Browse The Web In Private

One of the most desired features of a VPN app is the ability to surf the web privately. When you are connected to a VPN server, all of the traffic that originates from and is directed to domains that are not on the whitelist of the VPN service will be secured and any activity that happens will be completely anonymous. This feature makes VPNs an ideal choice for those who want to keep their browsing history and other online activity private. Anytime you use a public Wi-Fi network, you are putting your privacy at risk, but when you connect to a VPN server, the risk is significantly reduced.

To enable this feature on the ASUS router app, you will have to go to the ‘Settings’ tab and then click on the ‘Network’ icon. From here, you will find two entries that you can use to connect to a VPN server. These entries are called ‘Remote VPN’ and ‘Local VPN’. Using the Local VPN option will ensure that all of your internet traffic is secured, but the Remote VPN option will also protect your temporary internet traffic while you are browsing public Wi-Fi networks. In most cases, you will want to use the Remote VPN option so that you can browse the web privately while your internet connection is secure.

Many VPN services offer this feature but it is important to recognize that the internet connection that you are securing must be coming from an open and unsecured network. If you are connecting from a public Wi-Fi network that is not listed in your area, then the connection will be unsecured and any activity that happens will not be private.

Using A VPN To Secure Email

One of the main applications of a VPN is to secure email communication. This is possible because all of the traffic that is exchanged during an email conversation is encrypted as it travels from one email client to another. If someone were to intercept the traffic, they would be unable to read the contents of the email without first breaking the encryption. Even then, they would only be able to do this with the proper authorization from the sender and receiver.

In order to set up this feature on the ASUS router app, you will have to go to the ‘Settings’ tab and then click on ‘Email’. Here you will find two entries that you can use to connect to a VPN server. These entries are called ‘Satellite’ and ‘Express VPN’. Using the Express VPN option will ensure that all of your email communication is securely sent and received but the Satellite option will also protect your temporary email communication while you are browsing the web privately.

The majority of VPN services offer this feature so it is not a unique advantage of the ASUS app. However, if you are new to VPNs, then the Satellite option might be the simpler route as it does not require any configuration. Simply choose a server from the list of available servers, click the connect button, and you will be able to use the app to send and receive emails securely.

Many people prefer to use a VPN with their electronic devices as it provides an extra layer of security, especially if they are using public Wi-Fi networks to do their banking, shopping, or other important activities. As an added bonus, many VPNs offer an automatic kill switch, which prevents your device from being compromised if it gets disconnected or loses its internet connection while you are using it. This is a big plus if you are using public Wi-Fi networks in coffee shops or other places where there is the potential that your connection could be severed.

Protecting Your Identity On Social Media

With the increasing popularity of social media, it is important that we protect our identity on these platforms. One of the simplest ways to do this is by setting up a VPN on your social media accounts. This way, all of the activity that you do on these platforms will be private and no one will be able to see your activity unless you choose them to. You can use the ASUS router app to set up a VPN for your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media accounts so that your identity is not revealed whenever you are using them.
