How to Access Your Localhost on a Connected VPN

You have established a beautiful website, now what do you do? If you are looking for professional services, you have probably already paid for them. However, there is still hope for the common man. If you want to access your localhost on a connected VPN, then this article is for you. We will teach you how to do this and much more. Just follow along and take notes.

Open Your Favorite Web Browser And Navigate To Your Website

Before we begin, it is important to say that you should not use any tool to hack into your own website. Allowing access to your localhost through a VPN is akin to giving someone physical control of your computer. Although this may seem tempting, it is usually not a good idea to do so. There are many cases where individuals have been remotely hacked through VPN access, and it is always a pain to remediate the issue. Always think of security first, and use the VPN only as a last resort to protect your data. With that being said, let’s continue.

If you have created a beautiful website with a professional-looking header, or just updated your blog with lots of new content, then you probably want to browse to it on your desktop computer. On the other hand, if you are looking for a new hobby site or a portfolio for an upcoming entrepreneur, then you will want to browse to it on a smartphone or tablet. Before we begin our tutorial, it is important to state that you should not use any VPN to browse the internet from your workstation. Doing so could cause you to violate your employer’s network policy. If you are looking for a way to access your localhost on a connected VPN, then this article is for you. Let’s get started.

Install And Configure Your VPN Client On Your Workstation

Installing a VPN client on your workstation is fairly simple. You will follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup process. You will need to ensure that you have a VPN client installed before you begin browsing the internet on your connected device.

After you have installed the VPN client, you will need to configure it. To do this, you will click on the Settings button, then on the menu that appears, you will click on Network. Now you will need to enter your workstation’s IP address into the box that appears. It is usually presented as 192.168.1.x, where x is a number. Typing in the address manually is optional, but highly recommended. This will ensure that you can always connect to your workstation even when you are on the move. If you are using a router, then the IP address usually appears in the form of 192.168.0.x. You will need to enter this address as well for your VPN to work.

When you have entered both your workstation’s IP address and username, then click on OK. Now you will need to repeat this for each of your connected devices, including your mobile phones and tablets. Remember, you are repeating this process on each of these devices. Once you have configured all of them, then you can begin using your VPN. You may need to repeat this process every now and then as devices are removed and added to the network.

How To Browse Your Localhost On A Connected VPN

After you have configured your VPN client, you will need to open a browser on your workstation and navigate to the site that you wish to access. For example, if you have installed a WordPress site on your server then you will want to open up a browser and type in http://localhost. You will then see the WordPress login screen. Logging in with your username and password should bring up your WordPress dashboard. Congratulations, you have successfully accessed your localhost on a VPN. You can now begin adding content to your site and enjoying the extra security that a VPN provides.

To remove yourself from your workstation and back on your mobile or tablet, simply type in the URL of the site that you want to visit (http://localhost in our example) and press the Enter key. You will then see the website that you are trying to access. If this is the first time you have accessed your localhost using a VPN, then you will need to disable your workstation’s firewall so that it does not block the connection. Do this by clicking on the Enable button, then the Allow button on your router’s firewall. This will temporarily open up ports on your device so that you can more easily access content on the internet while using your VPN.

You should not have to do this step every time that you want to visit your localhost. The benefits of a VPN should provide you with extra security and privacy when accessing content online. Simply connecting to your workstation’s IP address gives you access to your localhost, plus all of the other resources on the internet via a VPN.
