Why Can People See My IP When I Use a VPN?

In some countries, such as the US and UK, using a VPN to access the internet is a legal requirement. But why do you need to be doing this if you live in NZ? Let’s find out.

Newzealand Is Different

If you’re accessing the web from New Zealand you’re doing so illegally. On September 20th 2019, New Zealand passed the Protection of Personal Information (Privacy) Act which came into effect on October 20th that year. This legislation clearly states that individuals must not sell or release their personal data to third parties. Moreover, they must not use a VPN to keep their personal data private. This law makes it pretty clear that you should not be using a VPN while browsing the web in New Zealand.

As a result, many providers shut down their VPN services to New Zealand. This is bad for those accessing the web from New Zealand as it makes using a VPN very unreliable. Luckily, there are still options such as Tor which can be used to browse the web without worrying about your personal data being compromised.

The Great British Privacy Victory

The UK government passed the Data Protection Act in 2018 which gave individuals greater control over their personal data. This law largely nullified the effect of the Privacy Act of 1974 which allowed individuals located in the UK to be provided with private investigators if their personal data was compromised. The effect of this change was that individuals in the UK could now take legal action against companies that misused their personal data. This also made it an offence to breach the privacy of another individual.

Thanks to this act, many providers re-enabled their VPN services to the UK. Moreover, many sites and apps that were blocked in the UK before the act was passed are now available to download. This great victory for British internet users and privacy advocates gives hope that other countries may follow suit and pass similar legislation.

Global Clusters

There are many reasons why you may want to access the web from different locations around the world. Perhaps you’re doing work which requires you to connect to multiple servers in different countries. Perhaps you’re using a virtual private server maintained by a company based in a different country to which you reside. Perhaps you just want to keep your personal data private while accessing content that is not geo-restricted. Whatever the reason, being able to connect to web resources from different geographic locations is possible with the use of a VPN.

Many providers, such as NordVPN, sell specialized VPNs that are designed to route your internet traffic through servers located in different countries. This feature is great if you need to access content which is not available in your country of residence. For instance, if you live in New Zealand and are unable to access the content contained within the Netflix library, you can download a VPN that has servers in the US and connect to one of those servers to gain access to content that is not available in New Zealand.

There are many reasons why you may want to connect to the web from different locations around the world. Being able to access your favorite websites and engage with content that is not available in your country of residence is just one example of why you may need to do this. The great thing about having so many options when it comes to VPNs is that there’s likely one out there that will suit your needs. No matter where you are in the world, if you have an internet connection you can find and connect to a VPN quickly and easily.
