Why Does VPN Not Work on AT&T U-verse?
I have tried multiple times to use a VPN when in AT&T U-verse. I got the “unable to determine your location” message every time when I tried to connect, even though I live in one of the supported locations. A call to customer service was not helpful, as a rep just told me that I need to use OpenVPN or PPTP for a VPN connection.
U-verse Support Is Poor
This is not the first time that I have encountered poor customer service when trying to use a VPN in AT&T U-verse. When I called to ask about the problem, an AT&T U-verse representative was unhelpful. In fact, they repeatedly told me that they don’t have a record of my complaint, and that’s probably because I did not file one. This lack of support is a huge deterrent for people who want to use a VPN.
Location Is Not An Issue
When I spoke with customer service, they told me that my location is not an issue, and that they could not help me because I needed to be in one of the following locations:
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco
- New York
- Chicago
- Houston
- Phoenix
- Atlanta
But I live in one of those cities, so why can’t I connect? Is it the service provider? Or is it just that I need to find out how to configure my VPN properly?
Multiple Apps Needed To Make VPN Work
While OpenVPN and PPTP are both supported by AT&T U-verse, for some reason, I could not make either of them work. After connecting to each of them and getting the “unable to determine the location” error, I tried again, this time using the built-in VPN client on my iPhone. After entering my network credentials, I was immediately connected, and all my traffic was encrypted. But as soon as I exited my VPN on my iPhone, I could no longer access the contents of my private web servers or email.
I did not experience this issue when connecting to OpenVPN or PPTP on a computer. It seems that I need a dedicated app for my iPhone and iPad to access the VPN. That’s a bit of a pain, since I use the same Apple IDs on all my devices. Having to make multiple sets of network credentials in order to access my VPN is also not ideal.

- Use a VPN to secure your connection to any cloud-based services which you use
- Use a strong password which is at least eight characters long and includes numbers, letters, and special characters
- Avoid clicking on any suspicious links which might appear in your emails, or on any website for which you do not know the owner
- Never share your personal information, such as credit card numbers and social security numbers, with anyone, even if they claim to be from “the government” or a “security department” of a large company
- When using public Wi-Fi networks, make sure that your device is not visible to anyone else (e.g., turn off your device’s Wi-Fi radio or change the wireless settings to “private”)

This includes services which you use for work, such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office 365, as well as those which you use for personal purposes, such as Google Docs and Amazon Cloud Drive. You should also consider using a VPN to access your bank accounts, PayPal, and other financial services online, since these services often use security measures which are similar to those used by the financial institutions with which you bank. Using a VPN to access these services is not completely secure, as a keylogger or malware on your computer might be able to get the necessary information to compromise your accounts. But at least these services will not be able to see your activity.
